So much is written about the important of exercise to condition our bodies, but we often forget that it’s equally important to nurture our spirit as well. The sad reality is that the human spirit is the most neglected aspect of ourselves, and yet is the aspect that can, if looked after properly, carry us through anything life throws our way.
Even though spiritual health is difficult to define, and often even harder to develop and maintain, its importance should not be ignored. High levels of spiritual wellness always lead to improved physical, social, and emotional health. In other words, by properly addressing your spiritual health, it’s possible to become more resilient and improve your level of overall health.
So What Is Spiritual Health?
Spiritual health is extremely individual, differing from person to person, and highly dependent on the amount of time you dedicate to developing your own personal spiritual values. The basis of spirituality comes from discovering a sense of meaningfulness in your life, and realising you have a unique purpose to fulfil.
Our spirituality can be shaped by many factors, depending on our beliefs, ethics, values, religious viewpoint and morals. But there is one unifying characteristic – no matter where you may be on your personal spiritual journey – and that is that spiritual health allows us to access the inner calm and peace we need to successfully deal with whatever life brings.
How Can I Grow My Spiritual Health?
Meditation – this encourages a deep sense of awareness or consciousness, achieved through relaxing your body and quieting your mind.
Yoga – The word “yoga” means union, and the practice cares for your whole body, as well as your mind and soul.
Labyrinths – these have long been used for walking meditation as a means to finding clarity and peace, while also helping to manage stress and aid decision-making.
Mandalas – the word means “sacred circle” in Sanskrit, and they are often used to facilitate meditation and aid healing.
If our spirit is strong, we can survive any challenge or difficulty with dignity and grace.
